Avatar - The Film

Ok. So i went to the movies yesterday and watched Avatar in 3D.

What can I say? Avoiding spoilers It clearly has to be said that this film is top notch when it comes to computer animations. In fact it is awesome and kind of frightening at the same time since at latest with this film you get the idea that "real" actors are hardly going to be needed in a couple of years time. Especially in the close ups and face shots you cannot even tell anymore that this is a computer animation and not reality (well...provided that blue aliens do exist... ).

I always found that the face shots, especially the movement of lips, teeth and hair where the problematic parts for animated films clearly giving away that this is not "real". Well, not anymore. This one looks close to perfect. I even think that the alien lady looks kinda hot.. (omg does this make me a smurf-loving pervert now? ).

Being my first 3D film all I can say is that my jaw dropped a couple of times during the first scenes of the film and I found myself being more occupied with taking off and putting on the 3D glasses (basically missing all of the action in the first minutes) to see the big difference between 2D and 3D. Top notch!

The plot itself is... well... average. Not quite as cheesy as titanic, but still: Take "Dances with Wolves", paint the indians with blue colour and you have avatar. Not toooo bad but definitely not the reason for watching the film. The 8.7 on IMDB is an obvious overrating in my opinion.

So: Go watch the movie to get an idea of what computers are capable of today. But do not expect a great plot with even the slightest surprising twists in the story. Everything has been there already and you will be able to tell the whole story after less than 5 minutes into the film.

I'd give it a 9/10 for the technical part (Only 9 because it looks and feels a bit too much like watching someone playing World of Warcraft - everything a bit too coloured)

The story cannot be rated any higher than maybe 3 or 4 out of 10 (the nice "avatar-idea" already included. Otherwise 2/10).

This makes it an overall 6/10 for now. But since this rating relies a lot on the technical part which will be outtaded soon, I am afraid that no one will really be talking about this movie in a couple of years' time. So in my opinion clearly not a classic.

What do you guys think?

i have yet to see this movie

i have yet to see this movie and but i have family and friends who have. They say the storyline isnt great and that watching the rest of the 2 hrs 40 min film is mostly for the visual part of the film.

Ill probably go see it this coming week but one thing they highly suggested was see it in 3D or dont see it at all.

Well, I wouldn't say it is a 2D movie.
The fact that the 3D effects have been used in a rather subitle way made them more special imho. This is the way 3D should be used and not just the usual "oh damn... that train is coming right towards me...run!!."
