Hey All,
I recently came upon these websites which were...profound in making me think about children and the future of earth. I wanted to share them with you. By all means, you do not have to agree with anything they say, but I honestly do believe that if you want to challenge your mind and your perceptions on humanity, that you give the vhemt website a read (I hate to say that I have a hard time disagreeing with it). The website is called vhemt.org
The second website that is well worth reading has a free .pdf book (you could buy it if you wanted to but you can read it for free so long as you have adobe acrobat). It details the problems going on right now with the world and what's going to happen (I only started reading into it but it's great!).
Anyhow, here's plenty of food for thought in case no one is online and you want to read something...
hatsoff

This current trend about environment and stuff is all fine with me but this is really ridiculous. Wishing your own species dead to save trees? Besides that its a pretty sick idea its also not natural. And extiction of human kind, is it a practicable proposition? Of course not. And are we really destroying the world? Nope. And the second source from the earth policy institute, I had a look at the first section about the future economy, its all based on fear, not truth. I saw all the other parts are about all other kinds of typical problems and they just put them all together in a nice novel, with the message "the world is about to end". Well very entertaining of course, but is all this doom thinking is a bit misplaced I think.

Interesting viewpoint Jag, but I respectfully disagree with you in that I do believe humanity is doing a great job at wrecking the world. I don't advocate those sites 100% but there is a lot of truth to them. There is a chart on the first site that is rather simple, but sharp in explaining why we want children (a good part of it is social conditioning c/o business corporations wanting us to consume). I do plan on having children, but no more than 2. I do try to be environmentally concious and after living here (where most people don't have dryers for example) I've come to realize just how much stuff I don't really use or need in my life.
The second websites .pdf is my favourite. Some of it may sound like doomsday material, but the author sited a LOT of sources (which gives any paper strength). Did you read all of it? I am still going through it page by page when I get a chance. Mark my words...in about 50 years a lot of us wont have access to oil or airplanes (we'll be out by then and planes can only run on oil) and it'll be difficult to get water to say the least. I think I read somewhere that this huge aquifer that supplies most of the water to the western U.S. is supposed to go dry in about 10-15 years...yikes! It just saddens me because if humanity made some changes, things wouldn't
have to go that way but it will...
Don't skim...give at least one section a good read before you judge. P
Still, I respect your opinion and I'm glad you stated it. I'm all for vibrant disccussion (hey I have to put my University degree to use right?) D

Well humans are affecting nature alright, but wrecking it is a bit over the top I think. And I dont think the environment should play a role when deciding whether you want kids and how many. And I did read parts of the first section of that pdf file but the arguments were flawed so after that I stopped reading. And I dont get me wrong, its not that I dont care about the environment thats completely not the case )

you know its really hard to change the way people live and ordinarly do stuff in a normal day basis specially since the've been doing this for a long time it has become a habit. I use a dryer i didnt bother purchasing an eco friendly one becuase it costs more , i could not use a dryer altogether and hang my clothes out to dry in a hanger outside ( provided the day is mild and sunny, on overcast days i would use dryer) but the clothes still wouldnt get dried the same way it would in the dryer. My point is humanity/people can change but they dont want to , the've gotten used to using these time saving appliaces that just doing things manually is probably a waste of time for them, why dry clothes outside and wait 2-3 hrs to get them dried when you can use a dryer and shorten the time by half, why walk to a retail store etc... when you can get there in 5 min by car, see where im going?

Well put Dante, I totally agree with you. But the thing is, unless a new source of cheap plentiful energy is invented and we can make cheap drinkable water, we wont have a choice but to change. / Without cheap plentiful energy, it becomes difficult to do so many of the things we depend on (travel, grow food, power RON D ) and without water, we wont be able to grow food or quench our thirst.
It will be interesting to see who gets elected in America and what path they take...

Hahahaha...well I guess all we can do is cross our fingers. At least there is a chance of either getting a female president or a black president, both of which would be a welcome change I think.

I dont think it would matter a lot whether the president is black or white, male or female. Its the things they stand for that makes the difference.
Its remarkable that there has never been a black or female president before though.

Good point...in the end I sometimes think politics are meaningless as it's big businesses that control things and not the people or government. I'm not trying to be negative but that's a lesson some of the wiser citizens and premier of my province learned the hard way.
All we can do is wait and see...

When george w.bush became president, did you hear how bush won the election? It was rigged , al gore won by alot and bush demanding a re count (becuase he couldnt accept losing) surprisingly he won the election after that... im pretty sure they are going to do this for McCain another guy who belives bush's war on terror crap. Usually i dont bother voting but if i do i would pick obama over clinton in my beliefs i do not think a woman is fit to lead the country in time of a crisis women usually have soft spots for making drastic decisions.. which could cause problems.

ROFL Dante! + 2 for you!
As sexist as it sounds, that is why women usually do not captain submarines or anything in the military because they are known for making decisions that have to do more with emotions than logic. That doesn't mean that women can't do well in politics (whoever is president is more like a puppet really) but yeah...I am surprised you American's haven't impeached him yet (for all the stuff he has done). I would love to visit that Vermont town that wanted to impeach him. D
A war on terror can never be won because it can never end. Bush and co. own all the media so most of the public will never stop thinking about it. Perpetual fear is the ultimate weapon...
I really do think that if the American's left, it'd make things a lot better there. Let them sort out their troubles, let them choose their fate. America has more important things to focus on I think...(such as stopping banks from giving fools too much money to buy houses they could never afford in the first place).

I am about to embark on a lobby of my government. I want solar panels on every house in Australia and cars that are capable of running on 80% or more of ethanol by the year 2050..simple yet effective solutions.
Re: VHEMT and earthpolicy.org
Submitted by _FSF_gisa on
The only problem with ethanol is that it tends to rely on crops. Perhaps some of you have noticed that the price of wheat has gone up...a lot! That's because farmers are shifing to a crop that can make ethanol as opposed to growing wheat (pays less, can't really blame them). This means problems for those who can't afford to buy food as it is...
A better solution would be to focus on hybrids or electric cars, because they can be recharged and repowered through renewable sources, such as windpower, solar, geothermal, etc...or sources that are somewhat cleaner, such as nuclear or natural gas.
I blame the car and oil oligarchy for making things the way they are. Ever wonder why there are no trams in most North American cities? They are the reason why (they bought out the companies that made the trams and closed up shop they were convicted of the crime and fined a dollar each what a joke!).
Ultimately, it's our centralized power combined with greed that will be our downfall...

In australia we have an org call csiro they do all sorts of stuff and have found a plant non food crop that will grow in dry arid areas with virtually no rain. this plant will suck carbon while it grows and produces like ten times the amount of stuff needed to make ethanol than wheat etc.. I am gonna buy 30 acres in a drought area and fill it with this shit one day..Yes big oil is a problem maybe we could all get together and burn the motherfuckers
